I think computers are fine, but I guess I'm more trusting of dedicated solutions for a live gig than consumer PC hardware, at least for something that isn't DJ-specific or electronic. I've seen stuff fail in rehearsals and I'd be pissed if something happened in a live situation. I'd also vastly prefer a Mac over a PC in a live situation for various reasons. I think it's okay when there's a dedicated person running that stuff, or if it's automated (like backing tracks in Ableton) and there's someone to watch over it. I'd prefer an MPC Live over a DAW (unless I was a DJ using Ableton or something). I'd prefer to use a dedicated synth than a softsynth. I'd rather rely on my Line 6 Helix than try to use a VST and an audio interface. I would rather have a Roland drum module than run Superior Drummer from my laptop in a live situation. While I'm not against hardware and software on stage, I personally have to say that I prefer dedicated hardware solutions for live sound. I personally love mixing from an iPad, but would never, ever use one without the instant backup of the surface itself if the wifi drops out. IME digital desks are much more flexible and only slightly less reliable than analogue for live environments. Some of our keys players like to blend the Nord sounds in with MainStage too. However we always hardwire the Nord in as well, so that if MainStage dies we can just fade up the keyboard itself and carry on, rather than troubleshooting or waiting for a reboot. We primarily use MainStage sounds with the Nord as a glorified MIDI keyboard. Our keys setup is dual: MainStage & a Nord Stage. (although you can't really do pads from a FI!) Now I've got a Future Impact, I don't really need MainStage anymore. Worked pretty well it took some tweaking to get sounds I was happy with but the flexibility was all there. Left my bass hanging around my neck and switched to the keyboard for a couple of tunes for synth bass. I've gigged MainStage from the bass seat once, it went fine.
